What is catnip? +
A herb in the mint family (Nepeta cataria). Some cats respond to it with rolling, purring, and short bursts of hyper play; others don't respond at all, which is genetic. About 70% of cats have the receptor.
How do I use it? +
Sprinkle a pinch on the floor, stuff it into a refillable toy, or put it in their food bowl. The effect lasts about 10 to 15 minutes, then most cats need a break before responding again.
Is catnip safe? +
Yes. It's non-addictive and non-toxic at the amounts cats will realistically eat. If they somehow eat a big pile at once, mild GI upset is possible, same as any herb. Skip essential oils and concentrated extracts; stick with dried.
What if my cat doesn't respond? +
Try silvervine. Roughly 80% of cats respond to silvervine, including most cats that don't respond to catnip. Our Kitty Ka-Zoom silvervine line was built for exactly this reason.
