What is Valerian Root?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) comes from the valerian plant, which is a tall, flowering grassland plant in the Caprifoliaceae family. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia but also grows in North America. It blooms with small purple, white, or pink flowers during the summer. Its roots have a strong, pungent smell because of valeric acid, which is an important contributor to valerian’s sedative effect.
What is it good for?
Valerian root has mild sedative qualities and has traditionally been used by humans to alleviate insomnia, stress, and anxiety. It has a similar effect on dogs and is commonly recommended by integrative vets for anxious pups. Valerian root can be useful for dogs that have anxiety due to loud noises like fireworks, gunfire, or thunderstorms, dogs that get anxious during car rides, vet visits, or with unfamiliar visitors, dogs with separation anxiety, and dogs that struggle to sleep at night.
How does it work?
Researchers believe that valerian root causes an increase in neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric, also known as GABA. These can be found in the brain and work with valerian root which causes a blockage between neurons and nerve transmitters. This means it slows down the stimulation that occurs in the brain, leaving your dog with a calming sensation.
Is it safe for dogs?
Valerian root is generally safe for dogs. The small amount in our treats shouldn’t be anything to worry about, but always check with your veterinarian. Valerian can sometimes interact with medications and isn’t recommended for puppies and pregnant dogs.
